Installing Java on Ubuntu

  • Setup the appropriate repositories for ease of install. Run the following commands in the terminal
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer
  • Check to see if you have the right Java version by typing the following in the terminal
java -version
  • You should see the following after typing the above
java version "1.7.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_45-b18)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.45-b08, mixed mode)
  • Enter the following at the bottom of the /etc/environment file:
JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle"
  • Type the following to activate and test it
source /etc/environment
echo $JAVA_HOME
  • And you should see the following response
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle
